The large historical university located in a city centre is made up of numerous traditional buildings requiring bespoke fire resistant doors. The large first floor covers around 400 m² and extends over four levels and three inner courtyards. The key design objective was to create a large open space full of natural light with the flexibility of alterations in the future. The renovations to the basement level enabled large light filled study rooms and a fitness area with a new subterranean walkway to the modern standardized triple gymnasium. The public nature of this project requires fire protection systems to be installed. Using slim steel framed doors enables maximise daylight to penetrate through into the hallways and gymnasium.
Architectural metal doors were used all the way through the long narrow hallway into the gymnasium. Fire resistant doors can often be a bulky design, however the material properties of steel allow for extremely slim sightlines to be created and profiles with a depth of only 60 mm. Steel doors offer the safety features of a fire protection system combined with a sophisticated, elegant steel finish. The architectural fire rated doors used are the perfect option for the high traffic areas and within a traditional, historical building where preservation is desired.
The fire rated steel door system provides five key benefits to the University; low maintenance, long life span and exceeding thermal performances, high levels of security and the slim narrow profiles providing an elegant design aesthetic to the Universities Gymnasium.
